The Revelation

First of all, let me preface this post by saying that I’ve been holding off on writing this for a while. This is kind of a hard post for me to write because it’s so personal. Anyway, here it goes…   Looking back I don’t know why I thought this road was going to be…

Kimberly Bonham - February 27, 2012 - 10:32 pm

I love reading this post Jennifer. Seems like you are on the right track and if your turning over to the Lord…there is not better way than that!

{amy k.} - February 27, 2012 - 10:39 pm

When you submit your will to the Lord and place yourself before him humble with a broken heart and a contrite spirit, you can’t go wrong. Seems like you are doing just that. You are a great inspiration to many!

Ash - February 27, 2012 - 10:44 pm

“In a field of self promotion I’m sent to do the opposite…to promote Jesus and to share His compassion for the least of these… You capture pretty people with money, not the people most of the world tries to forget. This revelation for my life is beautiful paradox.”

I’m so glad you’ve received this powerful revelation. This is really the struggle of an artist, of a creative person. Yet we must strive to compare ourselves to the ultimate Creator & Creative One.

He will lead you and teach you to tell the stories close to His heart.

Be blessed Jen, in all you do.

Faith - February 27, 2012 - 10:48 pm

The world needs artists like you, artists with a creative eye and a compassionate soul. You will capture their stories well, and His name will be made known.

Farrah - February 27, 2012 - 10:54 pm

Dearest Jennifer,

A beautiful and honest post. I must say that I have had similar struggles. Particularly with how to use photography to glorify his kingdom. My purpose was slowly being tarnished as I had an obsession with getting the best equipment and comparing myself to others etc
In diligent prayer, God has revealed a few things to me. Although as you say that weddings and engagements are about pretty people with money, I must say that this is quite irrelevant. The important thing is that it’s an opportunity for us as the photographers to build relationships with these people. To show humility, kindness, express our love to them. There’s definitely room for us to walk in the steps of Jesus while dealing with our clients.

Another point God made is that I can take beautiful photos no matter what equipment I use, I can tell a story in any equipment. For example some of my best images are on film, 20 dollar cameras or on a cheap 50mm1.8. It helped me to not get caught up with all the spending.

God has recently been using my gift at church as well, which I believe is in an amazing opportunity to serve God and use our talent at the same time.

I think it would be great to tell the stories of Ethiopian culture and of their women however don’t stop there. Your country has its stories and its struggles too. Pray for where God wants you to be. Most importantly, be humble. I’ll pray for you.

Blessings,
Farrah

Chelsea Nelson - February 27, 2012 - 10:56 pm

I feel like you took the words right out of my mouth. I always knew that we were supposed to get to know each other, but wow, God definitely has a plan here :) I will get in touch with you soon and give you details :) Great job!

Nicole - February 27, 2012 - 11:22 pm

I love LOVE this post, Jennifer. It spoke to my heart’s core, I’ve had a similar struggle with this. My business isn’t up and running yet because I have 3 more months before I graduate college and I’m trying to keep focused on that! But, I’ve struggled with how to glorify God through such a self promoting occupation, where it’s all about upgrading to the newest and best equipment. Reading this post made it even more clear to me that I need to continue praying for more direction and discernment..so thank you for that :)

I agree with what Farrah said though, that we create relationships with clients and show them the love of our Savior. They’ll see something different in our business over someone who isn’t a believer…at least hopefully they will! I think we can use the gifts that God gave us to further His kingdom in a relational way. After all, He created us as relational beings to mirror after Him so it only makes sense! I could keep writing but maybe I should just write a post about this too haha!

Thanks so much for sharing what’s been on your heart..I’ve been reading your posts quite religiously these last few months. I think you’ve created something beautiful here and you’re doing the Lord’s work through your photography right here on your blog :)

K - February 27, 2012 - 11:35 pm

Cheers to you for bravely following in spite of the many questions and doubts! I can personally relate at the moment as I made a pretty large decision (leaving grad school) and am trying to discern where God wants me to be. It’s great that you already have ideas and know where your heart is. Best of luck with everything! Please let me know if you decide to have sponsors for your trip as I’d love to help out.

Ashley {hudson's happenings} - February 27, 2012 - 11:36 pm

Jennifer. I will be thinking of you as you sort out the details of this amazing journey that you are beginning. You are such an inspiration to me, and so many others. You have the ability to change so many lives…all in the name of the Lord. God Bless YOU!

Michelle Johnson - February 27, 2012 - 11:53 pm

This post is so deep Jen! Most photographers just want to make their own name great, but a really great photographer understands there is so much more than that. Like you said, photographers have the power to impack so many people’s lives. A picture says a thousand words. I know God is going to use your willingness to serve and glorify Him to do awesome things. I’m so proud of you Sis :) You are a GREAT enouragement to me!

mandy - February 28, 2012 - 12:40 am

wow! i wish you the best of blessings as you courageously persue the dream God has envisioned for you!

Margaret - February 28, 2012 - 1:01 am

Thank you so much for your honesty. It’s so encouraging to see you doing life God’s way and following His plans for you. You will be rewarded ten-fold for this, for following His calling. You have an amazing opportunity ahead of you to share Jesus with others and to share the gut-wrenching, heart warming stories of the less fortunate. You have a chance to change people’s hearts and minds. This matters. I’ll be praying for you! xoxo – Margaret

Sarah Antweiler - February 28, 2012 - 1:24 am

Beautiful post from a beautiful woman. To God be the glory. He can use anything for His purpose! I can’t wait to see how this adventure unfolds for you. It’s going to be awesome, girl! Embrace the freedom of knowing you don’t have to do it…you just let God do the work and you be the vessel!

Courtney B - February 28, 2012 - 1:43 am

I am SO excited for you and your husband to go back together! I know you both will be changing lives!
Don’t stress about the unknown right now. You are so incredibly faithful, Jennifer. I know that the Lord will prompt you in which directions you should take. You will FEEL whether each decision is right or wrong for you!

Sherri - February 28, 2012 - 2:15 am

Jennifer, great article. I have always tried to run my little photography business as God’s & to show each of my client’s His love. I have however especially loved taking pictures on my mission trips to Honduras b/c they help capture God’s love of all people. My desire is to do a trip there one day just to do pictures. I will pray for you & your business b/c I know firsthand how difficult it can be in so many ways. God Bless You!!

Cindy Carroll - February 28, 2012 - 2:15 am

God is using you BIG time Jennifer!!! Your talent used for HIS kingdom and the voice to the VOICELESS makes me speechless~ which never happens to me! LOVE & HUGS & PRAYERS FOR THE JOURNEY!!!

Nicole Strain - February 28, 2012 - 3:09 am

Jennifer, a humble heart can bring glory to His name in ways we can’t even imagine! I love this and will be lifting you up!

PS
I wish we lived closer to each other and could be friends in *real* life. :)

ginanorma - February 28, 2012 - 4:03 am

Oh hon, I am sure you’ve heard me talk about this before. My theology on God’s Will. Thank you for being so open and honest here your authenticity is beautiful and godly. If it “helps” at all, just remember that as long as you are bringing God the glory, and are aligning with scripture, you are doing God’s Will! It is a struggle enough everyday to just rest in God’s will, but to have a successful photography business that can be so “worldly”, …not sure if you read my post on Beautifully Rooted last week, it’s under the Belief section and it’s called Fire and Prayer…it might resonate with you. Oh hon you are seeking the Lord and you LOVE HIM, and that is MORE THAN ENOUGH! XO

Natalie - February 28, 2012 - 4:25 am

Wow. I cannot wait to see where the Lord leads you with your business and photography! It’s going to be great!

jennifer blair - February 28, 2012 - 4:59 am

Thank you so much for your comment Nicole! I think pursuing photography is just as fine as pursuing any other career. God uses people through all different walks of life! It’s beautiful if that’s where you’re headed! Relationships are important no matter who you are. For me, seeking His will has led me down many a strange path…but I wouldn’t trade it for anything. If you are willing, He will use you. Thank your for being an encouragement to me.

jennifer blair - February 28, 2012 - 5:00 am

Yay! I’m so excited to see what is is Chels! :) I absolutely agree that we have crossed paths for a reason.

jennifer blair - February 28, 2012 - 5:44 am

Thank you Nicole! I wish we lived closer too!

Jeanine - February 28, 2012 - 5:47 am

As you usually do so well, I am captivated by your words. And inspired. I think that is the ultimate goal for us as humans– created to be the companions and friends of the greatest King. But then also–-to use the talents he gave to us for glorifying His name and multiplying it tenfold.

I am inspired that you are taking this step to do so with the gifts He has given you.

I can’t imagine you need much more training. Your photography is superb. You just need to go out there and tell the stories. I pray God opens the right doors in all areas for you. He will do the rest.

Excited to hear more :))

What a perfect way to use your gifts! I am so excited to see the adventures that the Lord sends you on!!

Stephanie Hart - February 28, 2012 - 5:15 pm

I love your heart. It’s beautiful.
Our stories (whether ours or hearing others) is one of the most powerful tools out there in connecting our hearts to another. I can’t wait to see what you do with sharing the stories of those who who need to be heard. I’m blessed to know you.

Amy - February 28, 2012 - 6:05 pm

I really love this post! Sometimes it’s hard for me to put into words the struggles that I face in my faith. It is a constant battle with our flesh, and often, my flesh wins. I wish I could have the courage to write it all down on my blog, but for some reason, I often don’t. This post really inspires me, so thank you for sharing. I think it’s amazing that you are using your gift to glorify the Lord! I can only hope that one day, I can say the same thing. Praying for you!

jennifer blair - February 28, 2012 - 6:28 pm

Thank you so much Amy!

Carola - February 28, 2012 - 7:56 pm

Christ, your pictures are amazing my dear! Keep on the good work!

Chelsea - February 28, 2012 - 9:34 pm

What an amazing post, of an even greater story! The God we serve is so awesome, and I am excited to see how He’ll use you to bring hope and healing to others!

CheChe - February 28, 2012 - 11:44 pm

I love this. As a tear fell down my face I felt myself heavily convicted. I am at a place where I am jobless, not looking and serving the Lord with my time at church. But I truly have no idea what I am supposed to be doing other than bible college and preparing to start school next semester at a local junior college. But I have no idea what I am supposed to be doing despite everything I just told you. Maybe I am seeking something bigger than just accepting and being faithful with the litte. But I definitely enjoyed this read.

I also apologize for being so absent on your blog :). Your loved and cherished in my heart!

♥CheChe

Rebecca - February 29, 2012 - 5:28 am

You have such a beautiful heart.

I love when you said, “In a field of self promotion I’m sent to do the opposite…to promote Jesus and to share His compassion for the least of these….”

Don’t forget the Bible verses in Mark 10:43-44, “…but whosoever will be great among you, shall be your minister: And whosoever of you will be the chiefest, shall be servant of all.”

In God’s kingdom, we go down to go up — never the other way around.

I can’t wait to see and read what you will share in the months ahead!

Bethany G - February 29, 2012 - 2:07 pm

Wow wow wow. Your heart is in the right place. What a unique and beautiful thing that God has called you to do! Sooo excited to see what will happen… Love you!

Hey, these are some great questions and thoughts! As I was reading it I instantly thought of Youth With A Mission (YWAM). If you don’t know about it, it’s a missions organization that trains people and then takes them on outreaches to serve all over the world. I did it in 2008.

ANYWAY, the point is that one of the friends I made now leads a school called Voice for the Voiceless and it focuses on telling people’s story through media. I’ve seen some of their work; its incredible.

I’m sure you have plans and are taking steps but I just thought I would give you the link for the school so you could check it out (lots of married couples do these schools too!)

Love your openness and honesty in this post. It is inspiring to see you use your talent to glorify God. This world feels like a constant battle, but I hope you find a peaceful place. Sounds like going to Ethiopia will be an amazing journey where you can follow your calling. I hope to someday be able to do the same :)

Jen – You are an inspiration to me. God has gifted you with an artistic spirit and an ability to write feeling that blows me away. I love your compassion and desire to love others, especially those that know no love. I am in awe of what God is doing in your life and how you are responding to His call. He is wonderful and He made you beautiful inside and out. I will be praying for you and Jonathon as you prepare for this journey. All our love…

Rebecca M. - March 3, 2012 - 9:14 pm

I can’t tell you how weirded out I just got by this… in a good way.
First of all, I’ve been following your blog for a while because, one, your blogs are always so good and your pictures and such are so cute, and, two, some things about us seem so similar to the point it actually almost scares me.
Which leads me to what I really wanted to say:

I read this blog a few seconds ago, and basically you’re speaking back to me the same thing God laid on my heart a few months ago. Not to necessarily use pictures (I’ve never been a big photographer), and I don’t have a business to fund their rescue from darkness (I’m a college kid…), but I believe God is calling me to use my words and storytelling to give these “statistics” faces and stories and names and lives. I feel like I need to speak up for the people who have no voice and just get pushed to the “statisctic” category. Actually, it’s been a process, but He’s been putting little things in my path for over a year now, but I am confident this is where He is leading me. I also went to Ethiopia this past summer (I returned the week before you left I think), and this was confirmed even more through that… anyway, this is really jumbled up I am sure because I am so excited to see someone being lead a similar direction and I can hardly type. Anyway, I just wanted to share that. And I’l be praying for you!

TJ - March 9, 2012 - 6:00 pm

thank you so much for your willingness to be so open. you are such a sweet spirit. and i’m so grateful for your open mind!
as always, you are always so inspiring!

There is something so beautiful about a life that’s surrendered to a greater cause. I am so encouraged by reading your story. I went to Passion 2010 & 2011, and was also really awakened to a ‘less of me, more of others (ultimately more of God)” way of life… To use the creative talents God has given me to touch the world. I’m not sure how ends will meet, but I know He will take care of it all. Thank you so much for inspiring. May God complete the work He has started in you!

Hi!
This is heinously overdue, but thank you coming by my blog! Your sweet comment really made me smile. :)

Ok, from reading this post, I can see that we have a LOT in common…chocolate cheerios, Safe and Sound, and Downton Abbey? Love those all!

A message from the other side of the pond; a love of Downton Abbey is definitely a good thing! I’m kinda jealous you guys are watching it for the first time and don’t know the outcomes of the storylines! I can’t wait for the next series :) Also, I am so excited about Spring, have a great few days with your family!

Laundry is on my agenda today, too! I’ve heard such great things about Downton Abbey. Maybe it’s time for me to check it out! :) Have a great trip, Jen.

It’s been too long since I’ve had a chance to visit over here Jen!
That sounds like a really fun trip!
I’ve been obsessed with that song lately too. Taylor Swift and Joy Williams voices sound amazing together!
I need to check out Downtown Abbey! I’ve heard awesome things about it!

I am reading that book as well! Due to responsibilities it has been taking me awhile to finish it, but I’ve enjoyed it a lot. I have to admit, I watch the entire first season on Downton Abbey in a couple of days. :)

Downton Abbey is a new favorite of mine, glad to hear I’m not the only one. It is my nighttime treat to myself. I just finished Season 1 on Netflix and was upset that I would not be able to watch Season 2 yet. I will check out PBS and see if it is still available to watch. Hope you guys had a great time visiting, the pictures are amazing!
